A crowdfunding campaign has raised more than $100,000 (£65,000) for a disabled boy who was blessed by Pope Francis in America.

Michael Keating, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was in Philadelphia with his mother in the crowd welcoming the Holy Father.

Francis was being driven past when he spotted Michael and asked the car to stop, so he could kiss the 10-year-old on his forehead.

Since then a donations page set up by friends and family of Michael has raised $107,000.

The donations page states: “So many people have reached out to [us] to share in the excitement of his blessing from Pope Francis. Many have asked if the Keatings could use any help.

“As transporting Michael is always a challenge, a handicap van has been on their wish list for years. We are raising money to put towards a new handicap accessible vehicle and any other expenses for Michael’s care.”

His mother, Kristin Keating, who has had two hernia surgeries as a result of lifting her son into her current van, told The Washington Post she “couldn’t believe” the amount of donations they have received.

Star Wars director J.J. Abrams and his wife were among those donating, the pair giving $50,000 to the family.
